What is an SBA Loan?

In 1953, the Small Business Act was passed, which established the SBA. SBA loans are designed to assist small business with their financing needs including starting a new business, expanding an existing one, or recovering from a disaster.   SBA loans are offered by private lenders and partially guaranteed by the U.S. Government. Advantages of an SBA loan include low interest rates, access to quick capital, longer repayment terms, flexibility, and more.

SBA 7(a) Business Loans

This is the most popular SBA loan type.  Flexible loan amounts from $50,000 to $5,000,000.  Loan terms are generally between 7 and 25 years, vary depending on how the loan proceeds are used.  Use the funds for Business debt refinancing, equipment and real estate purchases, acquisitions, partner buyouts, working capital, and more.

Business Qualifications include:

  • For profit businesses only

  • Demonstrated need for the loan and ability to repay

  • Must meet the SBA definition of a small business

  • Minimum equity injection/down payment of 10%
